What are the reasons for the great emphasis on “Health & Safety”? The simple answer is to protect health and safety of Employees and to prevent accidents & injuries in the Workplace. Many of us take our wellbeing for granted and often have the confidence ( misplaced confidence ? ) that accidents and injuries only occur to the other person. It will never happen to me! But, an accident is an unplanned event which can result in four general scenarios:
- Loss of life
- Loss of limbs and/or organs
- Permanent injuries
- Temporary injuries.
Each of these can have many different effects on the victim but why should we not ensure we are not one of the annual statistics gathered by the Health & Safety Authority.
Health & safety is everyone’s responsibility, not just Managements. Under the Duty of Care, we have the responsibility to ensure that whatever we do or fail to do does not result in an accident or injury to ourselves, in the first instance and by extension, to others.
